HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BEN ORR! Born Benjamin Orzechowski on September 8th 1947 in Lakewood, Ohio. He was the bassist, songwriter, co-founder and Co-lead singer for the cars. Known locally in Lakewood as Benny 11-letters, he became a proficient multi-instrumentalist at a young age. In 1964, at 16, he became guitarist and lead vocalist for the Grasshoppers, the house band for the syndicated TV show, UPBEAT, on WEWS-TV in Cleveland. They released two singles, one written by Orr. In 1966 the band dissolved when Orr and two others were drafted into the Army. In 1970 he started an 18 year musical partnership with Ric Ocasek that would involve a few failed groups before forming The Cars in 1976. Orr wrote, co-wrote and sang lead on some of The Cars best known songs including their highest charting song Drive. After The Cars disbanded in 1988 he continued making music and performing right up to his death in October of 2000 from pancreatic cancer. Heres Drive, live by The Cars.....Enjoy!
