Muhammed Bello,ADOKE, SAN,Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Nigerian Federation, an internationally-respected lawyer clocked the age of 51 on September1, 2014. Born in Okene,Kogi State on September 1, 1963, he was educated at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Kaduna state where he obtained a second class (Upper Divison) Degree in law in 1985. He was subsequently called to the Nigerian Bar in October 1986. He worked with the Kwara State Schools’ Management Boar before joining the Kano State Ministry of Justice as pupil counsel,Subsequently, he worked with Messers Zakari Yaro & Co; before establishing Messrs M.A Bello & Co. He has been in active practice since his call to bar in 1986. He holds a postgraduate Diploma in International Tax Law from Robert Kennedy University, Zurich, Switzerland; a Postgraduate Degree in International Commercial Law from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom and is a Fellow of the Chatered Institute of Arbitrators, U.K He has acted as an arbitrator, severally, in England and Nigeria and is presently a party appointed Arbitrator by the Federal Government of Nigeria in the Investment Dispute before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, Washington, D.C between Shell Ultra Deep Limited and the Federal Government of Nigeria. He is also the Federal Government appointed Arbitrator in the Global Steel Holdings Limited and Bureau of Public Enterprises Investment Dispute and AES Nigeria Barge Limited and Lagos State Government amongst several other important International Commercial Arbitrations. He is a member of the International Bar Association; member, Board of Peugeot Automobile Limited, Kaduna between 2006 and 2008; Chairman of the Board Audit committee of Unity Bank,Plc and currently a member of the Legal PractitionersPrivileges Committee.. He is also an honorary fellow of the Institute of Business Executives of Nigeria and Industrialists and Corporate Administrators. He was first appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Nigerian Federation on 6 April 2010, by President Goodluck Jonathan after he ascended Presidency after the demise of President Musa Yar’Adua. Following the re-emergence of the Goodluck Jonathan presidency on May 29, 2011, after the 2011 elections, Adoke was re-appointed to the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General. As Attorney General of the Federation, Adoke is the Chief Law Officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has the duty of ensuring the enforcement of the Nigerian Constitution and the nation’s compendium of laws in a way that reflects and meaningfully satisfies the fundamental objectives and directive principles of the Nigerian State. Specifically, it is Adoke’s peremptory duty to ensure that: 1. The Federal Republic of Nigeria operates as a State based on the principles of democracy and social justice; 2. The people of Nigeria remain the repository of the Sovereignty of their nation through whom any government under the Constitution derives its powers and authority at all times; 3. The security and welfare of the people of Nigeria remain the primary purpose of the Federal Government; 4. Nigeria’s people participate in their national government; and 5. The composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs are conducted in such a manner as to reflect Nigeria’s federal character so as to earn the loyalty of citizens thereby safeguarding the unity of nation.
