Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF became a separate branch of the U.S. military on 18 September 1947, under the National Security Act of that year. It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed, and is the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world. Currently, the USAF has over 330,000 active-duty personnel, 185,000 civilian personnel, 70,000 reserve personnel, and 105,000 air guard personnel, who operate over 5,000 aircraft, 400 ICBMs and 60 satellites. The USAF motto is "Uno Ab Alto" - One Over All.
