HAPPY THANKSGIVING I am going to have to keep this short as I - TopicsExpress

HAPPY THANKSGIVING I am going to have to keep this short as I have to write it with my eyes closed as during the night I developed an awful chemical congiuntivitis from the chemio that ended just two days ago. I was warned about it and keept washing my eyes in this little plastic tub, applying the supplied cortison drops but to no avail. Last night the burning started and this morning I cannot stand any form of light. Good thing Bro. Thomas (I think) taught me typing at NDI, as Ive since always typed with ten fingers and not really looking at the keyboard. Funny how everyone uses a computer these days but no one cares to learn how to type...doesnt really make sense, does it? Well. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you out there!! My family event, which of course I will be missing, has gotten out of hand. In the old days we used to have it at my grandfathers house on the hills over Florence. It was always a big affair as my Zio Beppe, as he preferred to be called not to be aged unduly, had six kids who each who in turn had at least three or four--lets see, thats already 32 people in just two generations. Today we are over 70, probably neared 80, and have to rent my cousins big events villa near Fiesole and hire tables, chairs and get a caterer for which we all contribute so its actually a rather weird Thanksgiving. There is no huge kitchen to loiter around in while the women prepare turkey and the kids run around pulling pigtails like we had in the seventies. The birds, two huge ones of course, are prepared at their respective homes by Aunt Elena and my mother, who are as hugely and somewhat sorely competitive, in an eternal roasting and stuffing contest that Elena tends to inevitably win. So protective aunt Elena is about her bird that she now doesnt even consent me to carve it (as she once did as second in comand to my father). Which, after the initial shock of the extent of her territorial instinct, is perfectly fine by me. Carving the huge beast (while the family grabbed all the best pieces before me) was always somewhat tiring and tiresome. Thanksgiving isnt a holiday in Italy of course, so thats another snag. It starts late, around 730 pm and ends real early, about 11pm. Its not like one of those american affairs Ive been to that start in the earliest afternoon, include football, lots of beer, etc. But its typically american in the sense that the family really does make an effort to attend from all corners of europe and sometimes the world. Only my niece Francesca, who I guess is currently lost somewhere in Nicaragua, will not make it. And I wont be there either, even though Im just a few klicks from the event. I thought about writing a little speech or recording a video (now pretty much impossible with my eyes closed) but maybe Ill resort to sending kermit in my place by voice overing one of his stand up routines or something, havent really thought it out yet. Anyway, please all of you have the happiest thanksgiving ever! Drink to my health if you get a chance! Love, Michael
