HAPPY WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY: Dearest friends, allow me to extend my most jubilant greetings! As evolution has chosen humans to lead this magnificent planet, it becomes our responsibility and accountability to ensure that this unique and only epicenter of life in the universe (onto this very day) is preserved and conserved in its purest form. Today all the species in the world, whether terrestrial, aves, aquatic, amphibians or arboreal are finding it increasingly difficult to hold on to their abodes of freedom. Today thousands of beautiful or once in a million years (phenomena) species are on the verge of premature extinction. Reports suggest that we have pushed the natural rate of extinction for plant and animal species by almost 10000 times. It is true humanity has advanced at the disadvantage of other species, by invading forests, air- space and oceans. Rapid industrialization and ruthless ideology of profiteering has led to one of the most dangerous trends of climate change, deforestation, poaching, hunting, illegal and unwarranted mining, contamination of water bodies and life sustaining air. But it is also true, that humanity stands for hope and compassion and we have always retained our capacity to change and to adopt goodness as the way forward. These are challenging times; today we might even shudder at the prospect of imagining a world without tigers and elephants and misfortune of our future generations for their inability to witness, once in a billion years, wonders like these. Our future generations would deprecate and criticize us, for the recklessness and carelessness we demonstrate today. We can still, make a difference by taking a small step forward. For instance we can persuade government agencies to regulate, recommend and reward business corporations to create and utilize greener ways of functioning. It can include the functional areas from manufacturing to transportation processes, while focusing on utilization of renewable sources of energy. Even in INDIA, coal is used to produce 60% of the energy (electric power) and about 12% stems from the renewable sources. Government needs to push, motivate and reward energy entities for adopting renewable sources of creating energy like solar and wind. We must, target -36% energy from renewable sources by 2025. And most important contribution towards protecting and preserving our mother planet must come from us. Our small acts like, pledging to always throw the waste material or garbage in the bins, to save water, to turn off electric appliances when not needed, to be opinion leaders and encourage your immediate society to have proper sanitization model and most importantly to make your friends aware of their responsibility towards a greener earth. These acts may seem to be trivial in their own nature, if viewed individually but collectively and in aggregates they make huge impact on the environment and our fellow species. Our every small action has a bearing on some part or sphere of the environment. Our collective actions can destroy or give the planet earth a fair chance to sustain. “Countries are not great because of their rulers but by how every citizen chooses to act in any given circumstances, countries greatness is an aggregate of its citizen’s greatness”. So this environment day , you may commence by pledging, to never throw any waste material outside the bin,( keep it in your pocket, in absence of the bin) and to plant one tree or sapling every month, it can be even in your home garden. NOIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY upholding its green ideology has decided to plant more than 3000 trees in its campus this month and its SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING is to adopt official theme of green engineering as to innovate and create ways of green technology and energy. -AKS
