HARARE - As Peter Moyo struggles to fit into his late father’s musical shoes, Tendai “Dotcom” Chipara has come in as the potential sungura artiste to replace the late legend, Tongai Moyo aka Dhewa. Born 29 years ago in Rushinga, Chipara, who is set to share the stage with sungura ace Alick Macheso in South Africa next month, said he does not have problem with Peter but he does not want to see Dhewa’s rich music legacy going to the dogs. Others see him as a “pathetic copycat,” dismally lacking creativity. He brushes aside such criticism, saying he was inspired by Dhewa. “I was inspired by Tongai Moyo and that is the reason I am closely following his footsteps from the voice, music arrangement and stage dress code,” he said. “I have not come to fight with his son Peter, but my mission is to see sungura music popularised by Leonard Dembo and Dhewa living forever,” said the Ramangwana Musica front- man. Chipara’s latest album Zvakutapira, which is receiving overwhelming airplay on local radio stations, is causing confusion in showbiz circles as many music lovers mistake it for one of the Samanyemba hit- maker’s projects. The album, recorded at Diamond Studios, carries seven tracks namely Mistake, Zvakutapira, Kunonoka Kugaya, Sona Sona, Simba RaMwari, Kumusha and Huya Tifare (Out of Africa). Chipara announced his arrival in the cut-throat music industry in 2011 with debut album Marwadzo which comprises six tracks before releasing Manyemwe, a seven track- album in 2012. Last year, he released his breakthrough album Ngwarawo which saw the artiste touring Australia where he staged about six concerts. “The tour boosted the group’s fortunes as we managed to bring our public address system and three vehicles to use in the industry. “Now we are not looking back and we hope to scale dizzy heights in the music industry. “We have tested the industry and we are convinced that one can make a living out of it.” said Chipara.
