HATING THOSE WE LOVE - adapted from fr munachi e. ezeogu cssp, «sunday homilies for year c» saturday, 8 september 2001. the women’s finals of the us open tennis tournament. venus and serena Williams—two sisters who love each other, live in the same house and share the same hotel room—battled and slugged it out against each other. they had to suspend their love for each other and «hate» each other because the one was an obstacle to the realization of the other’s goal to win the us open. from the venus-serena slug fest, we can learn much about JESUS’ injunction to «hate» our loved ones! we are to love our parents and siblings and spouses, and indeed everyone else, except when they become obstacles in our bid to win the crown of eternal life. JESUS implies that to be his disciple is to relativize every other thing in life: family or wealth, prosperity or health, pleasure or fame. on the list of our goals and priorities in life, attaining the kingdom of GOD must come first. today’s gospel shows us how absolute and how radical are the demands of discipleship. following JESUS is much harder than winning the us open. JESUS recognises our human weaknesses and invites us to have recourse to GOD, for without GOD we can do nothing.
