HBODCers.......... here is your next bad weather, inside training challenge. Teach your dog to speak on command, and then find some fun ways to entertain yourself and your friends. This is easy if you have a dog that is naturally vocal towards a toy or some other excitement. Capture the bark. All it takes is for you to get your dog to focus on the toy, bark, and then immediately put the toy behind your back and at the same time reward for the bark. Dont reward for continued barking. Once they have worked out that a short bark gets a treat (and continued barking does not get a treat), you can add a word like speak and maybe a hand signal like a finger snap or something imaginative. Always reward immediately that you get your desired behaviour, but not if the barking is continuous. If the bark is continuous, just wait and settle your dog. Never say no or reprimand. Try to reward the behaviour you want, and ignore the behaviour that you dont want. Be patient and consistent. Please enjoy Bingo who is speaking to my hand signal (which you cannot see on this video). What fun uses can you find for this??? BTW, teaching to speak on command (and not for continuous barking) is also a way to stop a dog that has a barking problem. They learn to bark under control, and not out of control.
