HCA will spend $32.2 million to build a fourth floor onto the Hendersonville Medical Center, an expansion that will make room for a neonatal intensive care unit. “Our research indicates that there is distinct need in Sumner County,” said Branson, an OBGYN. “ There are no neonatal intensive care beds in Sumner County. Our goal is to provide this service at the local hospital so that the patients do not need to go all the way downtown.” The level II-B NICU will serve premature babies born between 33 and 34 weeks, he said. Babies born earlier than that and mothers with complicated pregnancies will still be treated at TriStar Centennial Medical Center, which has a level III NICU, Branson said. The new fourth floor will actually be designated for medical-surgical patients, and existing space within the hospital reconfigured for the new NICU.
