HE TOUCHED MY LIPS, AND PURIFIED ME Isaiah 6:5-7 “Then I said, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then one of the Seraphims flew to me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.” The purity of a man’s tongue or lips decides how holy, blameless and justifiable he is before the throne of God: And again, the most dirtiest part of a man’s body is his tongue within his mouth, because the tongue is a world of iniquity, full of deadly poison (James 3:6-8). 1. A defiled tongue defiles the whole man (James 3:6); and, 2. A purified tongue purifies the whole man (Isaiah 6:7). There are lots to learn from the experience of Isaiah within chapter six: Isaiah, who was a prophet, was still having unclean lips even though he had being preaching and prophesying the word of God; and there was no way he would have being pure, and still have unclean lips with him. Therefore, there are men who preach the word of God, but still having unclean lips despite their preaching. Isaiah was not only having unclean lips, but he dwelt among people who had unclean lips also: describing the people as having unclean lips is a way of saying that the people were not pure either. No man who has unclean lips is holy or blameless before God. Therefore, do not let the language of the people of unclean lips to defile your own lips. It was the lips of Isaiah that condemned itself and Isaiah in the presence of God, no one else did; not even the Accuser of the Brethren, for Satan was not in the picture to condemn anyone. As the lips of Isaiah began to pronounce woe (negative confession) upon Isaiah, so does one’s own conscience condemns its owner who is guilty before God, just by seeing God: Blessed is the man whose conscience will neither condemn nor fight against in the presence of God and men (1 John 3:19-21, Romans 14:22), and blessed is the man whose own mouth will not condemn himself before the throne of Judgment (Matthew 12:36-37). While the heavens shouted Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD, Isaiah shouted woe and unholy is his lips. Isaiah became more self-conscious before God, instead of concentrating in the glory and praise of God; his condition made him to repulse himself from the holiness he has approached, and he was uncomfortable beholding the King, who is the Lord of host. Therefore, a Seraphim came and touched his lips with the live coal, which made his iniquity to be purged and he began to concentrate on the LORD. Yes, a live coal from a fiery altar was used to purify the whole man by just contacting the lips of the man: when his lips were touched with a living coal from the altar of God, his whole being were purged and purified from his iniquity. Therefore, the point to purify the man was on his lips or tongue: since the tongue is the world of iniquity that defiles the whole body of man (James 3:6), so purifying the tongue means to purify the whole body of the man (Isaiah 6:7). Like Isaiah, the LORD will purify the tongue and lips of his people, and then they will no longer do iniquity nor lie again: All those who use deceitful tongue to gain favour and riches from people shall be removed from among his people, and all those liars who call themselves children of God but who promise and fail shall not be counted among his people. No guile or falsehood shall be found in the tongue of those who are called his people: As it is written, “The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.” (Zephaniah 3:13). He who does not keep his words, he who promises and fails, he who uses cunning words to give other people false hope in order to gain advantage of them unduly, he who speaks lies in hypocrisy, he who’s words cannot be trusted before God and men, he who’s speeches are corrupt, he who praises God but curses man, he who’s yes is not yes and who’s no is not no (Matthew 5:37), any man who does not keep his words or his promise to even the least person on earth shall soon be consumed with everlasting fire of hell and eternal destruction (Revelation 21:8). The Devil is the Father of lies (John 8:44), whoever speaks a lie is a child to the devil, even though that person is a church worker or minister of the gospel or claims to be a child of God by useless confessions. The nature of the Fatherhood of God is truth and honesty, for it is impossible for God to lie or beget a liar. True holiness is after God, and the first sign of true holiness is to put off lying and falsehood in speech: this is why the moment we were admonished to put off the Old Man, and to put on the New Man in Christ who is true holiness, we were immediately asked to follow that up with 1. Putting off lying (Old Man – The Devil who is that Old Serpent that deceive Eve); and, 2. Putting on the speeches of truth with our neighbour (New Man – The Truth to or from the Father, Jesus Christ). As it is written, “If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” (Ephesians 4:21-25). Therefore, the first sign of true holiness is speaking the truth with everyone’s neighbour, in every time, every place and in everything.
