HE Times initiative ------------------------------------ The national-level deliberation on sanitation held in New Delhi on Tuesday highlighted several fresh, practical and effective ways to attain the Clean India status by 2019. Health & Environment Times organised the national seminar at the India International Centre here to find out the ways for supplementing the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The discussion underlined the policy reforms needed to achieve total sanitation for all. A high-level panel formed to ponder over the issue included Dr NB Mazumdar, senior technical advisor IL & FS and Gouri Shankar Ghosh, founder director, national Drinking Water Mission, on chair; Joseph Ravikumar, Water and Sanitation Specialist, World Bank; S.B. Dangayach, MD Sintex Industries Limited; Rajiv Kher, CMD 3S Saraplast; Lt.Gen. Rajender Singh, CEO DLF Foundation; Madhu Krishna, country consultant, WSH Team Bill Melinda Gates Foundation; Anand Shekhar, Team Leader, Global Sanitation Fund in India; Sanjiv Kumar, associate enviro engineers ltd and Sanjay Jha, social development specialist. The panel agreed that sanitation to all is an urgent need. “There must be a sense of urgency in achieving the mission,” the panel said, adding, “denying sanitation is like denying basic human rights.” The panel discussed what went wrong over the past years in carrying out several sanitation-related programmes, application of technology in sanitation mission and proper planning to ensure the desired results. The panel stressed, “Changing of mindset is essential to achieve the goal. Earlier, Member of Parliament Dr Arun Kumar released the HE Times’ special issue on sanitation. Addressing the large gathering on the occasion, Dr Kumar said that every area must be covered under the mission. Rajeshwar Raj, Member of Legislative Assembly; Sujoy Mojumdar, Director, Swachh Bharat Mission; Dr Regina Dube, senior advisor & head, sustainable Urban Habitat, GIZ and Dr Chitra Gupta guest editor, HE Times were also present on the occasion. Editor of HE Times Rajesh Sinha welcomed the guests and executive editor Shambhu Nath Sinha extended vote of thanks.
