HEADLINE: The Omniscience of the Graviton by Anthony Chipoletti SUBHEAD: Two Degrees South DESCRIPTION: Science fiction ABSTRACT: Timothy Lake, gravitational astronaut, takes a floating journey along the equator to save the gigantic cyclotron which circles the earth. Will he be able to repair the sinking earth supporting the titanic structure? CONTENT: Worried about losing his grip on gravity, Timothy Lake wafted along the corridor without touching the ground nor any object along the way. He leaned back as if lounging on an imaginary deck chair sailing on an ocean liner. The particle accelerator carried him like a womb, floating in amniotic space, he almost drifted off to sleep. His journey would have taken months or even years without the suspension technology balancing his body mass to the flow of energy along the equatorial cyclotron enclosure. By now, he could tell where he was from listening to the sound and size of the ocean waves striking the outer walls. Kiribati, Freedom, Kiritimati, Christmas. He realized that if the invisible tether, the centripetal embryonic cord, were to break with gravity, he would be borne out of a Ceasarean fracture through the cyclotron wall into a billion red tear drops. He had a vision of Columbo and the Clarke memorial. No one left to build his memorial. Unless.... What if it were possible to reverse the Big Bang, to undo our miscreant cosmology? If omniscience was contained within a closed graviton ring, would we realize that our origin was not the big bang, rather the spawning of our cosmos destroyed our spiritual wellness and integrity, trapping us a physical entities for billions of light years. Dude, get a grip. Timothy mused to himself, as he approached San Francisco de Quito, and the fault line. Two degrees south, two degrees south, he tried to stay awake to be sure of gripping the visible tether which would decelerate him safely. The sound of the waves stopped. In 1942, Hitler lost his shoe. Timothy recalled his earthquake history. In 1942, almost exactly on the equator, two degrees north of Quito, a major earthquake. Now all he had to do was track two degrees south, strike the Quito control rod with a graviton stream and lift the settled base of the cyclotron a few millimeters back to stability. A huge screech as the ground base rose to its supporting height, just below the cyclotrons outer shell. Once again, Timothy mused, I am going to print my name just below Arthurs on the Columbo statue.
