HEALTH ALERT: Please be aware we are in the very early stages of being attentive to an outbreak of meningitis (aka spinal meningitis) in the Los Angeles community. To date 8 people in LA county have been infected. Three of them gay men who have died; two of those 3 gay men were HIV positive. Compromised immune systems represent additional risk. Meningitis is easily passed in congested places, especially through coughing or intimate contact. Health professionals are encouraging each of us to explore some prevention thoughts as it might apply to ourselves and loved ones. There is a vaccine, and there are encouragements by health care professionals that we gay men get ourselves vaccinated.
