HEALTH OF YOUR LAMPS: lecture series; line 4. Light Level in a space: Yesterday we talked about the Luminous flux which was mentioned as light out put in all direction. Today we want to focus on the output of light in a known surface. Be fore that, There is another important definition of light output which is called Luminous Intensity or light intensity. This is the measure of light output in s specified direction. Now the light source is channeled to a direction of cast. Mostly at angles of beam, these light output is measured in a unit called candela (cd) see attached picture. Now the light level in a space (eg. a room) which is also called the average illuminance of that space a measure of the luminous flux per unit area. The unit is Lux which is calculated as lumen per square meter. (lm/sq M). See also attached picture. Now In your room, there is supposed to be an equal lux level (light level) in all parts of the room. This will enable you to perform a task in any part of that room without complain of insufficient light. This is achieved by spacing a light source of certain luminous flux in a particular equidistant proportion. there are standard lux levels for different spaces. Eg. the recommended lux for offices is around 320 lux, machine shop and high tolerance work areas should have about 400 lux while corridors and passage ways is just 40 lux. This light levels provide adequate illumination for performing tasks suitable for such spaces.
