HEALTHY INSIGHT - FROM THE EDITORS OF LIFESCRIPT January 16, 2015 | Special Edition Unsubscribe Treatment Options for Endometriosis Doctors arent sure what causes endometriosis, a gynecological condition that leads to pelvic pain and sometimes infertility. But treatment can reduce the severe discomfort many women with endometriosis experience. Endometriosis occurs when the tissue that makes up the lining of the uterus begins to grow outside the womb and spread to other organs, such as the abdomen, ovaries, bladder or bowel, says Kevin Audlin, M.D., an OB-GYN and co-director of the Endometriosis Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. The symptoms vary, but many patients experience heavy menstrual periods, combined with backaches, cramping and bloating, he says. Treatments for endometriosis may include the following: Hormone therapy: Birth control pills and other hormonal medications reduce pain by suppressing menstruation and stopping the growth of endometriosis tissue. They arent recommended for women who want to become pregnant. Pain medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen, naproxen and acetaminophen can reduce discomfort. More severe pain may require a prescription medication. Laparoscopic excision: In this outpatient surgery, a lighted viewing instrument is inserted through the abdominal cavity to examine a womans pelvic organs. At the same time, the doctor can remove visible endometriosis tissue and break down scar tissue that may be causing pain or infertility. Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus - and sometimes the ovaries as well - is considered a last resort for severe symptoms that arent relieved with other treatments. Lifestyle changes: Some doctors believe that eating a healthful diet (high in fruits, vegetables and fiber and lower in fatty meats) - along with reducing stress, maintaining a healthful weight and getting regular exercise - can help reduce endometriosis symptoms.
