HEARING TESTS begin in ONE WEEK for deaf & hard of hearing children who (most) have never seen an audiologist at The Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf. OUR GOALS: To slowly, one ear at a time, provide amplification and prepare for children to enter into the cochlear implant process if they are candidates. This may take many years, but we will do what we can...one ear at a time. In short: hearing and spoken language is our long-term goal for the children served at The Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf. Those are also the goals of the administrators of the school. Special thank you to Dr. Fred Bess & Susan Amberg at Vanderbilt for helping coordinate and also w/ supplies! If you dont know this story, its a good one. I had no idea about this school and had been meeting with the infamous Dr. Fred Bess at Vanderbilt on a mission trip. I went to his office and said, Dr. Bess, I have no idea where we are going, but I have an insatiable feeling that we need to plan for mission work. Dr. Bess had conducted many hearing missions and I knew he would be the man. :) About two months & two meetings later, I was approached by a friend about a school in Jamaica. An audiologist had been there and seen a few kids, AND A COUPLE CHILDREN WERE BRIEFLY GIVEN A HEARING AID....and when the Audi asked them to raise their hand to sound --- THEIR HAND WENT UP. But then, I was told, there has been no audiological follow up and no child at the school currently wears any hearing technology. So we accepted a challenge to develop a mission model that can easily be translated here in the US. Our goal is to create a mission team and method we can use here, also.
