Thank you :-D Reports are coming in that people in Norway, 800 miles from Bardarbunga are smelling sulphur fumes in the air over the last week. Experts are saying that the source of the smell is Icelands Bardabunga volcano over 800 miles from Norway. Bardabunga sits roughly 7 miles below the Dyngjujokull glacier, which is over 800 miles west and across the Atlantic from the coast of Norway. Vibeke Thyness from the Norways medical institute spoke on Norways radio station NRK, saying that current weather conditions and following a very active few weeks from Bardabunga have more than likely joined forces and pushed sulphur into Norways airspace. Thyness explains that the high pressure sat over Scotland (the source of our dry weather) along with little rain is how it has been possible for the fumes to of travel so far. However the fumes are not thought to be dangerous, but local authorities are advising residents to avoid being outdoors for long periods of time. Especially children and those with respiratory problems. Sara Barsotta a volcanologist from Icelands met office, has said to the Wall Street Journal, that gas emissions from the eruption site have been very high over the last week. Workers on the site are now having to wear safety wear such as gas masks and are carrying emission monitors. Volcanic activity at Bardabunga has been on the increase since the middle of August, as powerful quakes shook the area. Lava first began erupting on the 31st August. Scientists have discovered several large new fissures have formed along the surface, as well as a tell tale caldera. This caldera has been sinking below the surface by as much as 3 feet a day. The aviation industry are closely watching the situation, because Bardabunga sits directly below a vital flight path between the UK and America. Nobody wants a repeat of 2010, when Eyjafjallakokul erupted and caused a weeks worth of chaos for the aviation industry. Forcing the cancellation of 100,000 flights and closing European airspace for 5 days. Leaving thousands of travellers stranded and unable to travel. At present the current aviation alert remains at orange, due to further quakes continuing to effect the area. Ill leave you with a superb photo of the beautiful aurora over the erupting Bardabunga and another stunning shot of the lava field. Source : Kristinn R. Kristinsson Have a super duper Monday afternoon folks Joanne :-)
