HEAVY RAIN / DAMAGING WINDS FOR SYDNEY TODAY. An East Coast Low with multiple low circulation centres is moving North along the NSW South Coast today. A SEVERE Weather Warning is current. IDN28500 Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds and heavy rain for people in the Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts Issued at 4:42 am EST on Monday 18 August 2014. DAMAGING WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN TODAY MONDAY. Weather Situation A complex low pressure system is located off the central parts of the coast with a number of low pressure centres embedded within it. This system is forecast to move north today with the low centres passing near to the coast bringing heavy rain, gale-force winds and dangerous surf conditions to the South Coast and Illawarra. Gale-force winds and dangerous surf conditions are forecast to extend to the Sydney Metropolitan and Hunter coast from this afternoon. Damaging winds around 65 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are forecast for parts of the Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts. Dangerous surf with significant wave heights 4 to 5 metres expected today Monday. Large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, swimming and surfing. Thunderstorms and heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding are forecast for the Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts. Rainfall from 9am Sunday until 5am Monday: Camden 55 mm Porters Creek Dam 171mm Mongarlowe 142mm Sassafras 138mm Wattamolla in the upper Kangaroo Valley 136mm Brooman 126mm Fitzroy Falls 123mm Robertson 116mm Moruya 116mm 24 hour rainfall totals to 9am Sunday morning: Albion Park 64 mm Wollongong 62mm Bellambi 61mm Nowra 46 mm Moruya 39 mm Maximum wind gusts reported until 5am Monday: Kiama 91 km/h The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. Dont drive, ride or walk through flood water. Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 11:00 am EST Monday. This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
