HERE (WHERE?) THERE Oh my God, just opened an envelope I thought was empty and found two pages. On the pages were three handwrittten letters from my dad to his parents from the Navy. Love hearing his humor and youth... 12 February 1957 6 P.M. Hi Folks, Well heres the first day that were really out and out of the 350 men aboard I dont think theres 150 thats not sick. Im really lucky I guess because so far it hasnt bothered me. I asked a 3rd class Petty officer if he was going to die and he said God help me I hope so. Boy some of these gauys are really sick. We are on the edge of an Atlantic storm and its really rough. Even the old man says so. Ive got some pictures. I hope they turn out. The only difference being one day is rougher or calmer than the day before. We got out of that storm early yesterday morning but another one is supposed to clobber us this afternoon. Can you imagine waves that are 40 ft. high? Well thats how high they were Wednesday. Anyway, thats what the Captain said. Id of sworn they were 100 ft. or better. Well Ill sign off for now. Love, Max Feb 16 10 PM Here (Where?) 8 PM There Hi, Well right now were about a mile and a half from land ------ S T R A I G H T D O W N that is. Ha Ha! Well it was pretty nice today. We only hit one small storm and the waves only got between 15 and 20 ft high. Were supposed to get to Portugal (were going there first) next Saturday the 23rd. Ill try to mail this letter from there. Those D _ _ _ Sea Bees have been using too much water and were taking showers in half salt water. Boy is that a suffering dilemma. I got a very good from the Operations officer for not getting sea sick. How about that! Well Ill sign off for now. Love, Max
