**HERO ALERT!!** The pictures attached to this post are of Able, a RAIN pup with quite the history, who just saved the family he loves from a fire that took everything, except their lives. It is a long story, but worth the read. This is just one of the many, many reason we love saving animals! This is a true story of a rescue dog who travel 6,000 miles to find his forever home: Able came to RAIN/Rescuing Animals In Need last April, he was pulled from DeKalb County animal shelter by Georgia CAN, Georgia Canine Adoption Network, after he was attacked by a cell mate over food. Able only weighed 38 pounds at the time, was hungry, malnourished and unable to fight back. We were asked if we could take Able into our rescue. After a couple of months of vetting, feeding , loving and learning about this boy we decided to move him along and find him a forever home. Able began his journey across the United States to Washington State. When Able arrived he went into a foster home and returned him because he was acting out. Another foster home was found and the same thing happened. It was decided that Able would return back to Georgia and attend Argos Dogworks for training and we would try to find him a forever home locally. While at training it was determined that Able’s only real issue was crate training, (he would pee and poo in his crate and lay in it, regardless of how many times he was walked). This was corrected and Able came to live with me, Tracy Hunter. Able is a very sensitive dog that loves being with people, because I foster so many dogs, I was unable to keep him indoors all the time and he was housed in the kennels, where he was miserable. He was always happy to go for walks and hang out with me but dreaded going back into his pen. One afternoon our foster Darla N Money came by with her grandchildren to help me walk dogs and that is where Ables life began to change. Darla youngest granddaughter got Able out of his pen and took him for a walk and I believe an instant bond occurred. A few days later it was decided that Darla and her family would foster Able. Once Able arrived and met all the other animals, he went indoors and made himself at home. Over the next few weeks everyone in the family had bonded with Able (other dogs and cats too) and he bonded with their family. Every time I would speak to Darla she would tell me what a goof ball he is and how much they love having him in their lives. Within a few weeks a young man is allowed to stay the night on the couch. Late during the night, Able woke up Darla growling and barking, as the man was attempting to enter the hallway and Able would not allow him past a certain point (because his family was sleeping past that point). We will never know what the young man’s intentions were, maybe he just needed to use the bathroom, either way he left shortly afterwards. This past Thursday morning (Oct 16), around 2 am, Able showed the family once again how much he loves them. Darla was awoken by Able barking like he had never done before, she got up to see what was wrong and she discovered her house was on fire. Able stayed between his family and the fire while the children and other animals were being looked for and removed from the house through a window. When it came time for Able to go out the window he fought and got away, time was running out the fire was getting hotter and the air was unbearable, Darla reluctantly jumped out the window. They were screaming for Able to come to them, within a few moments Able jumped out the window and joined his family. He had made one final check to make sure all his humans were out of the house before he would leave. I dont know if you believe in Fate, but we do! Able was thrown away at the shelter, attacked and injured pretty bad, saved by a rescue, put into foster, transported across the united states, rejected and misunderstood, (normally if a dog in WA has issues he is placed in training there, an exception was made in this case and he was returned to Georgia) went through a training program and placed back into foster until Darla and her family met him and fell in love. This is where he was meant to be. The pictures below were taken hours after the fire, as you can see by the expressions on his face He is proud of himself and glad to have his family with him. Darla has lost her house and all of its contents and two cats, but she and her family, Samantha Slayer and two granddaughters are alive today thanks SUPER HERO ABLE!!!!!!
