HEROES by Shoni Plagmann Esquiro There are many kinds of heroes. The following are just a few of the heroes that I’ve heard of and learned about. There are the Greek heroes, the make believe heroes, and the real live heroes. Many people have many different points of view when it comes to the definition of hero. Some say heroes have supper powers, changing into their super hero identities like, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Spiderwoman and etc., then they fly around beating up the bad guys and saving the victims. Even though these characters are not real, many people would like to believe they are especially children. People have even tried to be like their super heroes. There are people young and old who might think that musicians are heroes like Elvis Presley or the Beatles, or that actors or actress are heroes. People spend thousands of dollars buying music or movies just to listen to or watch their heroes. There are also sports heroes. Athletes are considered heroes in some people’s eyes. There is baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, wrestling and many other sports. Many people also spend thousands of dollars for training to like to be like these heroes. You don’t have to be a good guy to be a hero. There are bank robbers and murders in jail that are considered to be heroes. Not that many people think that these guys are heroes, but there are those that think they are. Have you ever watched a move where you find yourself cheering for the thief to get away and live happily ever after with his mistress and the million dollars they robbed? Way back in Greek times they had heroes also. Make believe ones and real ones. One of the make believe heroes was Hercules. He had super powers with a powerful strength. He was also known to be part God. And then there were some real guys like David in the Bible Story, David and Goliath. He didn’t have any super powers, just a lot of faith in his God, which gave him courage and strength, and because of his faith he was able to kill a very large man who was considered to be a giant. Then there are others who feel that to be called a hero you must be a real person and actually do some kind of a heroic act. Like saving someone’s live. Also, I feel that in most children’s minds they feel that their mom or dad is the best hero in the world because they provide for them, and love them unconditionally. There are people who feel that the soldiers in the armed forces, that are, or have been in the wars like World War 1, World War 11 and in the Vietnam War are considered heroes too. Especially if they died during combat or did something courageous, like saving the lives of others. I feel that just being in a war would earn you the title of hero, because it takes a lot of courage to lay your life on the line and to fight for your country. My grandfather John Bingham was in World War II and my family and myself considers him to be one of the greatest heroes in the world. He had to walk all over Europe to different destination with his troops. The weather was either freezing cold or sweltering hot. Most of the time he went without medicine or a proper diet, and then when he did get to eat the food it was usually cold or just out of a can. He didn’t have a comfortable bed like us, sometimes he had to sleep standing or sitting in the mud in the cold night rain. He also lived in fear for his life, and with the devastating thought of taking another’s. He certainly did not have the comforts of his cozy home or the arms of his loved ones when he awoke from a frightening nightmare. My Grandfather gave up many years of his young life to assure me of mine…he is my hero!
