HEY EVERYONE, Next weekend, the 21st and 22nd is OLD SETTLERS DAYS FESTIVAL! some of the things to check out are: OLD SETTLERS DAYS FESTIVAL September 21 & 22 UNION • Jim and Diana Gossert of Indianapolis will make their second appearance this year portraying Indiana’s 14th Governor and his wife, Oliver Perry and Lucinda Morton. Governor Morton was well known for this support of President Abraham Lincoln and the Union cause. He even illegally called upon the State Militia in July of 1863 to stop those famous Morgan’s Raiders that terrorized Washington County. Legal actions were never brought against him because he was an honest man and when he finished his tern in 1867, Indiana was fully recovered from the hard times of the Civil War. CONFEDERATE • Mrs. Stonewall Jackson & her escort/brother Lieutenant Tim Morsten will greet you with their Southern charm. Lori and her spouse, Doug Roberts of Brownstown will be portraying Anna and Tim. Anna will draw you in with her stories about being married to the famous Confederate General. She initially did not like the fact that they nicknames him “stonewall”, Anna did not believe it was a good representation of his character but later on considered the name to be an honor and also carried the name of “Mrs. Stonewall Jackson” quite proudly. In later years she was recognized as the “First Lady of the South”. THOSE CAUGHT IN BETWEEN • Washington County’s own “Old Settler” was one of “those” that were caught in between. His name was John Williams and was also called “Black John”. He helped the Quakers with a school and an underground railroad that was usually the slave’s last stop on their trail to freedom. He became a wealthy man by blacksmithing and when his life ended his will declared that his money was to be used to fund education for African American students. These scholarships are still awarded today. John Williams died in 1863 and is buried at the edge of town at the site of the Black African Methodist Church. Portraying John Williams will be T.C. Baker of Clark County. T.C. is the pastor of Safe Harbor Christian Church in Henryville. T.C. will also be our guest speaker on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at the Village Church.
