HEY! I normally avoid heavy, predictable songs like the plague. Hey! comes dangerously close to being one of those. I wouldnt have recorded it except it has a killer eight-bar dual-guitar passage in the middle of it that I HAD to get out there so I can groove to it on my iPod. (The passage starts at the ninth bar of the breakdown and consists of guitar power chords playing off of guitar arpeggios.) The eight bars of pop-metal guitar riff that follows it is another thing I would normally avoid but it seemed to fit the situation. My first draft of it was much stronger but I suspected it had already been used in some famous song by Foreigner or something, so I changed it. A couple of other things I like are the gospel-tinged chorus in the outro and the primal hey chorus at the start. I think this song is a mix of leaden cliche with little flashes of unexpected brilliance. Its grown on me, though.
