HI BIZARDERS! ITS THE END OF WEEK 2!! CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE SEP Y14/15 RESULTS! We hope that you got what you wish for. Even if you dont and plan to apply again at the end of this semester, here is some fresh insight from TAIWAN! Our very first post from ASIA! Who says you have to go to Europe or US for exchange??? Read more to see how enriching exchange to Asian countries are from our senior, Inez Leong! Hi Bizaders! Im Inez, a year 2 bba student(: I went on exchange to National Chengchi University(NCCU) in Taipei, Taiwan last semester from September 2013 to early January 2014. I think the most memorable thing for me, was being able to forge friendships with both the Taiwanese and the other exchange students. I stayed at the i-house (a place 5 mins for school for international students) and thats where i got to know a lot of people from other countries. Accommodation: If you manage to get into NCCU, i highly recommend applying for the i-house cause its much better than the normal school dorms. You might even end up staying at the dorms on the mountain (Yes, part of the school campus is on a mountain) which isnt too convenient cause the shuttle bus stops at a certain time and you probably wont want to be walking up at night. Plus youre unlikely to meet other international students! I stayed in the single room which entitled me to my own bathroom (thats the best part of the i-house i think! haha) And theres a personal fridge in each room and aircon too! Room service also comes fortnightly. For a single room, its around S$2000 for the whole stay but thatd be the bulk of your expenses cause food isnt expensive. They also have a double-person room option. The supermarket and other stores are also located nearby (Youll have to walk past them to get to school, so its really convenient!:D) But one downside is that there will be many exchange students applying for it so you may not get a room even if you do apply. Expenses & lifestyle: The bulk will definitely be on accommodation, and shopping? at the night markets. haha. If youre the type that likes to shop. I think that it also takes some time getting used to the pace of life in Taiwan because things move very slowly compared to Singapore. A very relaxing environment to be in(: And for those who want to improve your Chinese, this is definitely the place to go! In NCCU, they also assign Taiwanese buddies to you, and I was very blessed to have 2 very friendly buddies who introduced me to their friends as well!(: They brought me to many different places and were also able to recommend the must-go places in Taiwan. Cafes are also a big thing in Taiwan and are relatively cheaper than the ones in Singapore. Modules: Most of the courses offered are in Chinese but there are quite a number that are in English too! So mapping modules shouldnt be a problem. They have both core and finance spec mods, so if youre planning to major in finance this is quite a good option. Plus there isnt a bell curve in NCCU, so meeting the SEP passing requirement is easy. I actually took up one Chinese-taught module and the teacher was really nice because he allowed me to answer the exam in English. All my Taiwanese teachers were very nice and understanding especially when i requested to take early examinations due to the difference in the school term. All in all, a tip for people going on SEP is to be open to meeting new people because these friendships dont end when SEP ends. And its the people that make the experience, at least it was for mine(:
