HIDING IN PLAIN SITE. I like that statement. It is very relevant in todays world, whether it be applied to corrupt politicians, fraudulent bankers , organised gangs of child abusers and of course the ever growing list of suspects linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The public can see the crimes, we presume the establishment can see the crimes but they mostly go unpunished. If eventually the obvious criminals are unmasked it is always accompanied with the usual well whod of thought it ? , trotted out by the very upholders of justice and media who were negligent in not acting earlier. So can we apply this statement to the parents of the missing child ? Quite possibly. But how and why ? There is one certainty in this case and that is that a small child is missing, nothing else is a given fact. Sure we have those pesky dog alerts and the contradictory statements given by those closest to the events but nothing that a good barrister couldnt demolish in a well funded defence. In reality we dont even know when the child actually went missing. So was this deliberate or did Frankensteins monster become uncontrollable ? Wouldnt any sane parents who had harmed their child seek to remain under the radar if at all possible ? Would a group of above intelligent people believe they could evade suspicion by accusing the police of incompetence ? I think the answer is yes and yes. By under the radar I mean above suspicion, by avoiding police scrutiny I mean, doctors by the very nature of their profession are not used to being doubted, especially if assured of assistance. After all if we cant trust those charged with the task of protecting our health, who can we trust ? That wheels were in motion prior to the alert I think is a given but something that night threw a spanner in the works and after the monster was given life it could not be stopped. I dont think the main players in situ had any idea what they had unleashed. The story was being reported by the Telegraph within two hours of the alert. Were the outside players waiting for the media alerts before springing into action so as not to arouse suspicion ? Ambassador Buck was on site the very next day telling us that he wanted to assure himself that the necessary links between Portugal and Britain were in place. The British Ambassador in person !? Citizens are not afforded that luxury when receiving the death penalty in a foreign country ! It is also clear that pressure from the highest level was put on Portugal to pursue the abduction theory despite not a shred of evidence. Interpol and Europol were on the case. CEOPS ( who?) were deployed, cabinet ministers in huddled discussions. A sophisticated PR campaign, initially by UK officials was ready to go. Later it was reported that any dissenters within the embassy staff were moved to different posts ( reported in the German press). Exit Sheree Dodd enter stage left that bastion of the truth, Clarence Mitchell, he of the many lying teeth and at this stage I believe the McCanns began to believe their own publicity. So sure was Mr Mitchell of his remit that Mr Amaral tells us he was warned that I should take care on the eve of the publication of his book. In the immediate aftermath they looked like rabbits caught in the headlights, there was no emotion, no tears only expressions of shock. Not fear and grief because a child was missing ( those emotions I believe were dealt with at an earlier time), but because the enormity of the situation was beginning to dawn and their ability to control the monster was taken out of their hands. No longer could they run away and hide in obscurity like most parents of such a tragedy, quietly working for solution behind the scenes. We now have a case of believing their own publicity, safe in the knowledge there is a vast army of experts working to maintain the façade and deflect dissent from the obvious suspects. This assurance has found an ally in the egos of both parents and the longer it goes on the more confident they become. A triumph of self publicity backed ( to the casual observer) by the legitimacy of high ranking ex police luminaries and ( cough), respected journalists. Will this self assurance be allowed to go unchecked, unaccountable? Will anyone have the guts to challenge this monster ? Who knows. The other players, ie the holiday companions are keeping a very low profile. I cant recall any show of solidarity after the initial furore. Celebrity endorsers, so vocal in 07 are now conspicuous by their absence, save a few z list presenters. I think we will have to wait for one of the perpetrators of this heinous crime to claim the £2 million reward, although I doubt there is much chance of that given that criminals remain notoriously loyal to each other when offered the opportunity to earn a cool few million quid. Either that or another secret game is now being played out behind the scenes by Scotland yard. Only time will tell and weve got plenty of that eh ? ·
