HIGHER ED RANT OF THE DAY.... I was listening to the radio station this morning, and a mom called in devastated that her son doesnt want to play football his Senior year in High School and would rather work and enjoy his last year and save for college.... her response: I just spent all this money on him playing football for 12 years and for camp this summer, and now he decides he doesnt want to play... I feel like forcing him to play, so he can try and get academic scholarships and potentially play professional ball. The kids reason for quitting? Coach said he wasnt going to get much playing time and wasnt going to start this season. I guess chances of him going pro are slim now.... BUT, the bigger question is how the mom and other parents dont understand the damage they are doing to their kids by forcing them to play sports, among other things, when they truly dont want to. I cant count on one hand how many students I had this past year say they didnt want to major in education, or play sports, or do this and that, but their parents made them and it made them miserable. I will admit, I tried just about every sport but hockey, and played most for a season or two. I will also admit I complain about my family or parents every now and then. But my parents never once forced me to do anything, besides eat vegetables, gross, and I think I turned out just fine. I found my true passion in my career, helping college students transition and succeed, and truly enjoy what I do each and every day. I think that it is time that parents stop living out their regrets and stop living vicariously through their kids, and let them have a life of their own. College is the only time that they can make mistakes and for the most part, not effect the real world after graduation. END RANT
