End-times enthusiasm isnt new or unique to Christianity. The manner it is currently used to manipulate vast swaths otherwise sensible people is. A combination of factors account for this. The freedom and liberty that carny-barking, thunder-thumping self appointed Prophets of Jesus feel to sever any and all formal ties from the history of the Christian Church facilitate this metastasizing ecstatic myopic weltanschauung. Dispensational pre-millennial rapture theology is rather new on the seen. It wasnt around for the Abomination of Desolation, though those early Christians where just as perplexed. In times past, calmer heads have prevailed. Now, the more congregants divest themselves from the future, the more the mega-churches are benefited. If the end is coming tomorrow, why worry about national debt, water supply, toxic pollution and on and on and on. To add insult to injury, these same shameless prophets, point to the simple requests of the gay and lesbian community for the same legal rights and protections as everyone else, as further validation the very last days, hours,seconds are upon us. Give your money, help get the message out and build our gargantuan monstrous churches. And yet, this unexamined faith rest on a far from circumspect examination of the Bible. The sole rule of faith and practice. Little is asked about its history and adoption by the church in times past. So one the one hand, a formal connection is categorically rejected to a historically linked church. While at the same time unblinkingly embracing the Bible validated by that same historic church. That this might pose a bit of a conundrum doesnt phase the self-assured people in the least. No wonder they wind up with leaders like Sarah. Departing in 10 minutes, next stop, heaven.
