HILLSIDE HELPS-“And let us not grow weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:9) My dear mother often used the term “working your finger to the bone”. This is an expression of hard work, long hours, and little rest. She and my father had day jobs and during the growing season would arrive from a long hard day at work, change clothes, and head to the garden to plant, weed, or gather vegetables. At dark, back to the house they would go and stay up half the night processing the food by canning or freezing. They never made much money, but you can be sure all seven of the McNeers always had something to eat. When the children got “big enough”, we all pitched in to help, as much as we could. Many nights we would all be asleep, except Mama, who was up in the kitchen finishing things or cleaning up. How weary she would get at times. Many a morning she was up at 3:30 am back at it again. There were days she would be so weary and worn out. But, thank God she eventually reaped a harvest of rest when she entered heavens portal. Each of us know something about hard work and what it means to get tired and worn out from all our long days and nights. Somehow God grants us the grace to make it through each. Spiritually speaking, we can get worn out as well. We try to keep our priorities in order; God, family, and work, but so often they get all scrambled. Then, it really becomes difficult and discouraging. Now days, in particular, families are stretched to the limit. In all the downsizing due to the economy, workloads have been shifted from many workers to few workers, and virtually everyone is carrying a double or triple work load, not even counting the responsibilities at home. How do we manage the hectic and burdensome loads we are carrying? I feel it is a good thing to stop, step back, and look at our lives through the eyes of the Lord. I mean, get out of the tunnel, take deep breath, and think about what we are doing and why. God designed us to work and enjoy life, along with its ups and downs. Many times the pressure we are under is not coming from God above, but from within our own hearts and minds. We want to do our best to try and please everybody at work, at home, and even at church. We drive ourselves to make things happen, even if it takes all day and half the night. The Word tells us, “let us not be weary in well doing”. That sounds impossible with all we have to do, right? The Lord wants us to keep our focus, but understand there is only one in first place. All the rest of us are in second place, or worse. In our work and walk with God, we can’t let it get us down. We should give God and our boss the best we have day by day with a clear understanding that what we didn’t get completed today, will be waiting for us tomorrow. The promise we have is, “in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” There is a time for sowing and a time of harvest. Each thing you do in life is like planting seeds that will later come up and bear fruit. We must make sure we are planting the right seeds in God’s kingdom, with our families, and at our jobs. Today, weary ones, faint not for the results of your hard work will pay off for the Glory of God. Keep your hand to the plow, and your heart close to God and you will make it fine.
