HILLSIDE HELPS-“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21) You will never go wrong, if you always do what is right. But, how can we know what is right or wrong? When God created us to each He gave an inner conscious, which is a deep seated, yet limited understanding of what is right and what is wrong. This is evident among even very small children. With the instruction and discipline of caring parents and teachers, children are taught to obey the laws of God and man. The purpose of knowing what is right is to avoid doing what is wrong. The standard of right is written in our hearts. We learn through painful experiences two very basic lessons. When we do right, there are blessings and rewards, but when we do wrong there will be discipline and consequences. Just as our children need to be praised and given positive re-enforcement when they do the right things, so also, they need to be corrected and disciplined for doing the wrong things. In the Word of God we can see this revealed as the Father blesses and rewards His children for being right and doing right according to the standard of His Word and Will. On the other hand, we also see how God deals with His disobedient children. The only way to do what is right and good is to be right. When we are at peace with God, through faith in Jesus, we are made right. Not only do we have the inner knowledge given from God, the wisdom of what is right taught to us by others, but now, we have the Holy Spirit that lives in our hearts. He is there to be a constant teacher and reminder of what is right or wrong in God’s eyes. God’s desire is for each of us to avoid that which is evil. We are warned of the evil one who is always ready to pounce on us. He is like an impatient and hungry lion walking about looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) Evil is all around us and will overcome us unless we stand fast against it. Living a holy life is a struggle and constant battle. It requires constant attention and the continuous power of the Holy Spirit leading, guiding, and protecting our hearts, minds, and bodies. If we do not resist the devil, we will end up assisting the devil in our own failures. The natural thing to do is default into the wrong, the sin that waits to beset us. The supernatural action is to stand against evil and overcome it. If we do nothing to prepare and equip ourselves to resist evil, like a lion, evil will devour us. But, with the strength of God made available through the Holy Spirit, we can stand firm and overcome evil. Today, thank the Lord for the victory He makes available to us. To overcome evil, do what is right every time. God’s will is to overcome evil with good. When we are right with God we will do right, and by His grace and mercy, we will have victory over evil.
