HINDSIGHT ROHIT SINGH RANA Rapists shame India repeatedly, turning it into rape land Two women raped in a moving car by three men in Gurgoan followed by the attempted rape of a women and murder by a pizza boy in Mumbai, victims of Uttarakhand raped and their modesty outraged in the sacred Himalayas, this is the oldest civilization and proudly called Jagat Guru or the World teacher. The land of spirituality and one of the most ancient lands is fast turning into a rape land. We have Iceland, the land of ice, Greenland meaning whose eternal snow give out a green tinge, Netherland, whose toiling men have since centuries kept the sea at bay. India was Bharat, the land of Bharata son of Shakuntala and Dushyant. We have forgotten that it is Bharat, only Pakistan for an equally curious reason calls our country Bharat because it does not want to call it Hindustan as Hindus to it represent an infidel nation and thus a declared enemy. Back home, Bharat or Hindustan or India of Greeks which they called the country some two thousand years ago is turning into a strange land. It is patently at war with what it preached since times immemorial. The deep and universal meaning of Upanishads, Gita, laments of Bharathari, preaching of Nanak, Kabir Amir Khusru, Surdas, Tuslidas, Abdul Rahim Khani khana, have all been relegated to background. They are not worth attention in the minds of Indian policy makers and future experts. Leaving them to their high ground which they will never shun, India is up for a big trouble if the rising trends of rapes are not countered with some hard measures. The time is turning against the entire nation with potential rapists stalking in every nook or corner, in any creepy hole to pounce on our daughters, sisters or young mothers. The big misfortune is that neither the state apparatus nor the judiciary is willing to fast track the rape trials so that some deterrence could become an order. But that is nowhere in sight. Nirbhaya stirred the conscience of the nation by moblising support of young men and women and all people from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari. The nation was assured that a strict law on rape will be top most priority that will ensure summary justice for rape victims. Seven months have passed and the trial of her tormentors in still under way with the most horrific minor rapist brute, still pleading not guilty. A nation that is fully occupied with politicking and debating over the charms of Modi versus Rahul Gandhi will not deliver its justice. Secularism, unimagined fears, assumed enemies, caste equations, vote banks and personal greed of our law makers will only make the rapists stronger. If one is raping our daughters physically, the law makers are raping the country mentally. No wonder that India is fast turning into a rape land with many countries cautioning their women either not to travel to India or exercise vigilance while visiting the country. Rape is a grave insult and crime to woman. It leaves her fragile in body and mind but in absence of any effective mechanism to safe guard their modesty the women of India will have to shun the rape stigma forever. They are to realize that it is their duty to lay low their tormentors with a great and collective movement that will force the rhino skinned law makers of the country to rise to the call of their conscience, if they have one and re define laws regarding rape. Summary trials are definitely needed otherwise rapists will swell in number and India will be reduced to a country of rape wolves ever ready to pounce on its prey. Will we as a nation ever reform and mend our ways. It is a million dollar question. With hundreds of our law makers having criminal back ground adorning the Parliament and many times more debating and designing the future of our state Assemblies, it is unlikely that India will regain its lost glory. Till better sense dawns, India is fast turning into a rape land.
