(HINDUTVA) Togadiya’s veiled warning to BJP on Hindutva... NAGPUR: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Wednesday issued a veiled warning to its saffron sibling BharatiyaJanata Party against deviating from the Hindutva line. Its working president PravinTogadiya, refraining from naming the BJP, said any party not keeping consistency with its core ideology was bound to suffer political credibility. The caution notice comes at a time when BJP’s most hardline leader NarendraModi, who is also being seen as a prime ministerial candidate, is being perceived to be going soft on Hindutva to enhance his acceptability. Togadiya, though based in Gujarat, is known to be at daggers drawn with Modi as the VHP feels he has not done enough to bail out the accused in the 2002 Gujarat riots cases. He is among the staunchest critics of Modi. Strangely, Togadiya, while talking to reporters here, was overcautious about uttering anything against Modi. He was so much guarded that it gave clear impression that he was put on leash by the RSS which is supposed to have a say in such matters. The VHP leader insisted that Modi’s name as PM candidate has till date not been proposed or discussed at any official forum of the BJP. Moreover, he said, it was not prudent to announce PM candidate a year in advance as the rival parties would do their best to discredit him much before run-up to elections. Harping on Hindutva, Togadiya said it was wrong to say anyone protecting interests of Hindus was not secular. “As far as I understand politics, secularism is intrinsic in every party, it’s the bread and butter of all the parties. So there is no need to dwell on it. But if anyone failed to stick to its core ideology, it would have to pay dearly in the 2014 elections,” he warned. He said protecting the Hindu interests and achieving developmental goals could be complementary and not contradictory notions. He insisted that Hindutva line could be the USP of the BJP. Asked if the VHP itself had gone soft on core sensitive issues like Ram temple at Ayodhya, he said this was not the case. “The VHP is wedded to the cause of Ram temple. At the Kumbh Mela at Allahabad, saints and dharma gurus chalked out a plan for ‘Ram naam jap’ (recital of Lord Rama’s name) and the VHP implemented it all over the country. Now the dharma sansad will meet at Hardwar in June to decide further course of action,” he said, asserting that the VHP was pursuing its dream. (Times of India 17/5/13)
