HISD needs to take heed of what hes saying. HISD has closed more black schools in the past 5 years or consolidated them but not the other schools. Then to make matters even worse, when HISD closed the doors to Ryan Middle School to reopen it as the Debakey Middle School for Health Professions. HISD never acknowledged the history of that building NOR ERECTED A PLAQUE to give HOMAGE to the history of the building formally known as James D Ryan Middle School. The ORIGINAL NAME IS Est in 1926 as Jack Yates Colored High School. This was the 2nd only public school in Houston where children of color could attend school. In 1893, Houston opened its 1st colored high school named Colored High School which is now known as BTW - Booker T. Washington High School. JAMES T RYAN was the 1st Principal of Yates Colored High until he died in 1941and the school was later named after him, there has not been 1MARKER OR PLAQUE at the Debakey Middle school acknowledging the DESERVING HISTORY OF THAT BUILDING. So I say, YATES SUPPORTERS AND COMMUNITY WE NEED TO CONTINUR RALLYING BEHIND KEEPING OUR HISTORY STRONG and not let them rebuild a subpar building to replace JACK YATES HIGH SCHOOL. All the new schoolS have magnificent designs so therefore JACK YATES deserves one too. Also it would be so nice to have a dedication wall to commemorate the History of this PROUD SCHOOL and to honor Jack Yates and James D Ryan and all those 1st 600 students and 17 teachers whom opened Yates Colored High School in 1926 ON THE MAIN HALL of the NEW AND IMPROVED JACK YATES HIGH SCHOOL and those that whom have carried the LEGACY ON.
