HISTORY OF CHIHUAHUAS & poll on cutting my hair. Im taking a poll here, and your opinion is crucial to the outcome. To shave or not to shave, that is the question. See, I am a long-haired Chihuahua, a native, in fact of Mexico. The most common theory is that Chihuahuas are descended from the Techichi, a companion dog favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. This is based on dog pots (kind of a weird concept, if you ask me) from Colima, Mexico. These pots were buried in tombs that date back to 300 B.C. and seem to picture my breeds ancestor, Techichis. However, my own theory (yeah, and that of some human anthropologists, which are thick on the ground here) is that I am actually Mayan in origin, which is extremely fitting, given where I now live in the Yucatan. But, here is the creepy part. The Mayan connection is based on finding what I think are dogs approximating the Chihuahua in the ruins of Chichen Itza on the Yucatán Peninsula. Now, I love my people, but if one dies, I am not at all sure I should be walled in with them on a journey to the spirit world. Maybe I am misreading this. My Spanish is not great once you get out of present tense. Anyway, back to my issue. I am naturally a long-haired Chihuahua. Now, Im not talking about those little bald-lookin rat kind of things (no disrespect intended to those pitiful, shaky little things that ride around in womens purses). LONG-HAIRED, BIG DOG. MANLY, thats me. (See photos) But, it is still in the mid-80s here, and some people think I should get groomed. Groomed is another word for having your coat buzzed and nails trimmed (hate that). But, Im not too hot, most days. There is shade, cool tiles, AC (which my ancestors did not have). And I look fabulous as my coat grows out from its Texas summer cut. (See pic#3 of the summer cut grown out one month.) I mean, I still look adorable when my coat is short. Thats my job. That and hoovering the dining area. So, whats your opinion? If I get trimmed now, it will be a year before it is the cool season (low 80s daytime, mid 60s at night) In Merida. On the other hand, I am kind of furry. Can you even tell Im a dog when Im on my back playing with my Love Bug toy? A little embarrassing, kind of a fur ball. Like means let my hair grow until March or April. Give me a dog with hair, long beautiful hair. Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen...... Well, you get the point, even if you never saw the musical. Comment if you favor the Marine buzz cut. My Corgi Beauty, Helen, there in the Little Mermaid outfit last Halloween gets two votes. (Although my vet says dressing dogs in Halloween outfits is why canines bite humans.) Obi, my main man, gets 5 votes. Grayson, you got a view?
