HISTORY STORY Under God Was Only Added To The Pledge of Allegiance To Separate From Atheist Rivals, The Communists! The change to America’s Pledge Of Allegiance conveniently made way on Flag Day in 1954. This was done during the Cold War as a way for other countries to differentiate communists from Americans. This change was also one of the more controversial aspects of the creation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Illinois politician Lois A. Bowman was the first to initiate the addition of “under God” and claimed the addition came from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address speech. While some versions of the speech do not include this phrase, reporter transcripts do - which was more than enough proof for Bowman. An age-old controversy has been whether or not someone is allowed to sit out for the salute, based on religious beliefs. As the 11th circuit court and the first amendment states, one is allowed to choose whether or not they stand and salute towards the flag. There is no negative repercussions for doing so.
