HIV PATIENTS LIVING WITHOUT AIDS These are people referred to as Non- Progressors. They can be infected with the HIV, but will not show any signs and symptoms; even years afterwards. Even if they show, they can live for as long as 30 years. They do not need antiretroviral therapy. But they can still spread the virus to others. How possible is this? 1. APOBEC35 PROTEIN COMBINATION: Such people may have large quantities of this protein that disrupts HIV reverse transcription. 2. EARLY ANTIBODY PRODUCTION Upon entry of the HIV, the body usually produces antibodies after 2-4 years. At this point the reservior has already been established and antibodies will not be enough to prevent AIDS progression. However in such people, these antibodies emerge earlier and delay the course of AIDS. 3. They may be infected with a weaker strain of the HIV, with a missing key viral protein; hence less able to infect CD4+ Tcells. 4. They may lack a receptor on their immune cells that is normally used by the HIV to gain entry.
