HOCKEY: Some time after the final shots on goal were announced in Friday nights Empire B Junior C Hockey League between the Napanee Raiders and Deseronto Storm, Jordan Cannons and Chris Rogalsky must have exchanged some words ... or maybe even a little earlier. Their chat would have been about being involved in what could be the two games with the highest number of shots on goal given up by one team in league history. But this time, the Raiders Cannons can at least say he wasnt on the team that gave them up. While blasting the Storm, who had just one goaltender and eight skaters at their disposal, 12-0 on Friday night, the Raiders pumped 93 shots at Deseronto netminder Aaron Young, which is believed to be a record amount of shots faced by a goaltender in a single game in league history. He did, however, make 81 saves, which is also most likely a record. But, get this, it has been worse for the Storm. On Feb. 2, 2013, the Storm were pummelled 13-0 by the Picton Pirates, with the Pirates outshooting the Storm 101-17. Yes, 101 shots, but not all came against the same goaltender as Ben Elliot was mercifully rescued from the net after seeing a dizzying 80 shots in the first two periods. And now, Cannons and Rogalsky, who both endured the 101-shot game as Deseronto teammates in 2012-13 but are now opponents in 2014-15, can say theyve been there for both, although Rogalsky is the guy who really deserves our condolences. Two Raiders — Cullen Hinds and Austin Boulard — scored hat tricks on Friday night against the stunningly short-handed Storm, who likely cant go on much longer with just eight skaters. Hinds added an assist for a team-leading four-point night. Single goals were notched by 16-year-old defenceman Aidan Girduckis in just second game back with the Raiders, Zach Knapp-Hermer, Brandon Nadeau, Keenan Murray, Michael Parr and Brodie Butt. Girduckis was an OHL draft pick of the Belleville Bulls this past spring and is returning to action after recovering from a broken ankle. He played five games early in the season with Picton before joining the Raiders for two and then breaking an ankle in late October. Cannons and Josh Murphy assisted on three goals apiece. Tomo Mikuljan gained his third shutout of the season, making 19 saves. He now leads the league in shutouts and save percentage (.911) and is second in goals-against average (2.65). — Sportsgate.ca
