HOCKEY: The Fort McMurray Bouchier Group Junior Oil Barons stretched their winning streak to seven games after taking two on the road this weekend in the Edmonton Rural Bantam AA Hockey League. The bantam Junior Barons were at the Legal Arena Saturday, delivering a 6-2 defeat to the Sturgeon Mustangs, before heading to Slave Lake and defeating the Thunder 9-4 Sunday. The victories gave the Junior Barons a 10-2-1 record and a shared lead on points (21) in the leagues Rural Black North Division with the Fort St John Flyers, who also have 10 wins, but have played two more games than Fort McMurray. That sets up an exciting two-game weekend at home for the Junior Barons this Saturday and Sunday, when they will host the Flyers in the Frank Lacroix Arena. In their only regular-season meeting so far — on October 11 — the Flyers came out on top 5-1. Saturday in Legal, Gerrik Ripley started the scoring for Fort McMurray in the first period, assisted by Ben Graham. With the Mustangs yet to score, the Junior Barons bagged two more in the second period, thanks to Patrick Polistena (assisted by Jared Smith) and Jordan Sheasgreen (assisted by Polistena and Ryan Mercer). The Mustangs collected their two goals against Junior Barons goaltender Ashton Abel in the third period, but Fort McMurray still had three more of their own coming: by Darian Adams, from Avery Ripley, who later scored his own goal with the help of Adams, and by Bailey Legge, assisted by Scott Compton and Gerrik Ripley. Abel made 26 saves for Fort McMurray on the way to the win. In Slave Lake Sunday, the Junior Barons exited the first period with a 3-0 lead, built on two goals by Graham, assisted first by Brayden Pruden and Avery Ripley (on his way to four assists) and then by Adams, who scored the periods third goal and began what would turn out to be a hat trick. Adams was assisted by Avery Ripley and Pruden on that first counter. The Thunder scored twice in the second period, but the Junior Barons added four. Those included Adams second goal, from Avery Ripley and Graham, followed by two goals from Avery Ripley that had Adams returning the favour on one and Graham assisting on the other. The periods last Junior Barons goal came from Polistena, from Sheasgreen and Mercer. Adams completed his hat trick early in the third period, with Avery Ripley getting his fourth assist on that one. And, while the Thunder were finding their final two goals, Sheasgreen slipped in one more, assisted by Mercer and Gregory Mulhall. This coming weekend, Saturdays home game against the Fort St. John Flyers will start are 3:30 p.m., with Sundays faceoff coming at 10 a.m.
