HOLY COW. So it was at this time LAST YEAR that Pax had a beautiful baby blessing and kirtan at Parkside Lutheran Church that many beloved friends attended, and Shannon Callahan and Chris Kelly became godparents to Pax, and Annie Scherer Allen, Melissa Honeybee, Bekah Starr and Ben Siegel helped out with the ceremony. Emily Lenore, Nick Stroczkowski, Carl Armstrong chanted it up, and held it down while I mostly held Pax. And my mom changed a diaper in the middle of a kirtan. And Nate Preisinger, the pastor of Parkside Lutheran, who I barely knew at the time and now is a wonderful friend, did a beautiful blessing wishing a wonderful future for the yogis that were now becoming part of the community there, and for our mutual communities. For it was also at this time last year that Yoga Parkside was born. This year has been such a whirlwind that Im sitting here in absolute shock that 1) ive made it through the first year of having a yoga studio 2) that somehow im still standing and mostly laughing 3) the lessons I am learning about myself as both a mama and business owner are the most difficult and profound yet. As I sit here and reflect (hence why I chose this reflective picture of Pax at 3 months), here are some random thoughts about this past year, and whats to come: Sleep is awesome and crazy important. But you can make it through and be highly productive with very little. Youre right Jim Bush. Community is where its at. Katie Mallinson, Megan McClain Kwacz, Emily-Rose Barry, Trixie Hobbitses Von Costaback, Andrea Ranallo Rodriguez, Eliza Schneider, Amy L Coleman, Kate Panfil, and more recently Heather Lovegood, thank you for caring for Pax so very wonderfully, generously and lovingly. As Dory says, just keep swimming. I cant tell you how many times that got/gets me through. Lighten the f*&% up. For realz Meg. Keep at it! ;) Enjoy the ride, breathe through the transitions, trust, and let go. Organization and minimalism and subtraction: aspirations of mine for years. Absolute necessities now. Huge goals in this department for year 2.0 studio and mommy hood. Theres time in this life for a lot that we want to do, not everything, and definitely not all at once. Make some space to enjoy the people you are here with for this crazy ride. Laugh with them, breathe with them, listen to them and love them. Forget about your to dos and get as present as you can. They are what this is all about. Babies are BUDDHAS. Not just because they are bald and cute and sometimes jolly and have adorable bellies, but because of the way they thrust you so unabashedly balls out into the moment again and again, looking through you with love, and no pretense as they beam right now, right now, right now on an endless loop. A friend told me the first year of a babies life is pure being, which is an amazing thing to experience. Now as Pax moves into doing I am reeling and adjusting again and enjoying all his movements and discoveries and scientific baby quests. The mantra seems to now be be flexible! adjust! adapt! keep breathing! :) Thank you for blessing my life you magnificent little teacher!!! Limitation is OK and crucial. Every yes is a no, and every no is a yes. Check in and make sure you are living your dharma and not someone elses, and not living from shoulds but from an honest wellspring from deep within yourself and the universe. If its not feeling authentic, call yourself out, figure it out, and shift it. And, Ill close with these words, which really could have been my whole post and cut to the chase.... my beloved Matthew Crane, you are such a wonderful parent to this child, and endlessly supportive of his mother. Last year you said these words to our son: The atoms from which you are made were forged in the heart of vanishing stars. Always remember this, and know how small you are, how fragile, and how short the sum of human years. But stand in awe of Life: the wonder of its complexity, the miracle that it exists, and the remarkable human capacity to contemplate its mysteries. Aho.
