HONG KONG IS BURNING #HongKongs student-led movement has made it clear that it expects #Beijing to live up to its promise to grant the former #British #colony full #democracy. It was #DengXiaoping who formulated the concept One Country, Two Systems, a constitutional principle for the reunification of #China during the early 1980s. Under this principle distinct #Chinese regions such as Hong Kong, #Macau, and #Taiwan could retain their own #capitalist #economic and #political systems, while the rest of China continued in the #socialist system. They would even be allowed relations with foreign countries and in the case of Taiwan, it would be able to maintain its own military force. However, Beijing ruled in August that it would screen candidates who want to run for Hong Kongs chief executive (the figure equivalent to Governor in the past), sparking immediate protests, especially from young people. Leung Chun-ying, the current pro-Beijing chief executive, has called for new talks with protesters this Tuesday, but unrest and outrage are back in the streets after riot police launched a baton charge at a large crowd earlier today. Protesters retreated about 50m but then quickly regrouped and then, wearing goggles, masks and construction helmets charged back. They also reclaimed areas that had been previously cleared by the police. If that were not enough, TV footage has emerged of a group of police officers beating a protester in a dark corner early Wednesday, enfuriating protesters even further.
