HONG KONG PROTEST UPDATE The size of the Hong Kong Protests - TopicsExpress

HONG KONG PROTEST UPDATE The size of the Hong Kong Protests dwindled early this week after attacks against protesters by thugs many believe to be hired by the government and a promised meeting between the government and student leaders which was scheduled for today. Yesterday, the government announced it was canceling the meeting and now the Protesters are back to show they will not give in. This is our only choice if the government blocks the conversation. We are tired but we don’t want to lose, said Joshua Wong, one of the student leaders, and followed this with a chant of Democracy now, democracy in Hong Kong, we will never give up.” Perhaps as many as 10,000 people have swarmed the downtown financial district where days earlier only a few hundred die-hard protesters had remained on the streets. Facing a renewed crisis, the pro-Beijing side has turned to claims that the protest movement is organized and funded by the United States and other Western nations, a claim that is adamantly denied by protest organizers. Yet the response has come from more than just Western nations, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has also voiced support for the renewal of the protest in which he stated that democracy is a universal human right. Perhaps the best statement came from the student leader Alex Chow who said You cannot escape from us — maybe for now, but not forever. You cannot insult us forever. This government has no legitimacy.” The Protest is not over.
