HOPE On Sunday January 11th, SOH received a call for help from a small town 18 hours N/W of us. Mike was caring for a young black bear that he named Hope. She had been found in the snow unable to stand, emaciated and near death. She needed help quickly. The rescuer had been unable to get help from local agencies and was now calling everyone he could to find some guidance and assistance in getting treatment for Hope. Coincidentally, Dr Sherri Cox of the National Wildlife Centre was at SOH at the time of the call. She spoke with the rescuer to get specifics on the injuries and condition of Hope, and it was apparent that the bear urgently needed medical attention that was not available nearby. Looking for swift action, we enlisted the help of another non-profit organization called Pilots N Paws; a group of private pilots who donate their time & resources to fly animals in need of emergency care. Once flown to central Ontario, the bear would need specialized care and rehabilitation. Bear With Us Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre for Bears, a bear rehab facility near Huntsville had also been in conversation with the rescuer and agreed to accept the bear if travel could be arranged. Many, many phone calls later ... between Shades of Hope, National Wildlife Centre, Bear With Us, Pilots N Paws, the MNR and the rescuer - and the logistics were finally worked out. Permission from the MNR for transport was finally received today, and Hope should be transported to Bear With Us this weekend. This story is a testament to how much can be accomplished and overcome when people work together with a common goal. This story is far from over ... so stay tuned and join this caring circle by showing your support in whatever way you can. HOPE is what we live for ...
