*HOUSE OF CABLES* Blogisode #9: They heard it through the grapevine Following Joan’s advice, today I met with Sam McCable who’s been with the company since day one. The purpose of the meeting was to get as much information as possible about what was done, communication-wise, when Cablinc opened its factories in Portugal and Slovakia. Just like Yasmin Kushal, the first thing Sam remembered was the negative feeling that permeated the company at the time, mainly the factory floor. Workers assumed the UK factory was closing down and were extremely worried that they would lose their jobs. We all know the power of the grapevine… As far as he remembers the extent of the communications activity at the time was: * the Communications Director sent a few emails letting everyone know a new factory was opening * two sessions were held at the cafeteria (one for the day shift and another one for the factory night shift) for John McChief, the already CEO, to explain the reason for opening the new factories. Unfortunately then was a bit too late – morale had been very, very low for a while. Sam even remembers the Senior Team discussing an increase in sick leave at the time… It was great talking with Sam! He’s a sweet, sweet guy! He told me great stories about the company. I feel I know Cablinc a lot better now. This chat should have been a mandatory element of my induction! ------ Keeping employees properly informed and giving them space to openly discuss their concerns is key to maintain the morale and prevent reducing productivity.
