HOW MOURINHO ENGINEERED THE FABREGAS TO CHELSEA DEAL Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho put the groundwork in place for the signing of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona just days after the Spanish league season ended, with a phone call persuading the former Arsenal skipper to move to Stamford Bridge. Earlier this week Chelsea completed the signing of Fabregas from Barcelona for a fee of €33m, the midfielder signing a five-year contract with Mourinhos men and also taking the number 4 shirt. That Fabregas was prepared to join Arsenals rivals was a source of surprise for some, but Mourinho had long admired the Spaniard and personally reassured him of his role at the club. According to Spanish daily El Confidencial, Mourinho personally called Fabregas just days after La Liga ended to urge him to join Chelsea. Mourinho promised that he would make Fabregas a key man at Stamford Bridge and put the entire weight of the Stamford Bridge operation behind him to ensure he settled and enjoyed his football.
