HOW PUTTING ALL YOUR ROTTEN EGGS IN ONE ANTI-OBAMACARE BASKET COULD KILL This week, the House of Representatives passed a bill which would redefine what is a full-time employee under the Affordable Care Act. It would establish a 40-hour work week instead of a 30-hour work week as the standard for what qualifies as full-time. What the bills Republican supporters claim is that it will remove an incentive for employers of 50 or more to reduce workers hours in order to avoid the ACA mandate that they provide a worker health insurance plan or face penalties. This is a popular GOP talking point...that employers are reducing worker hours from full-time to part-time because of the ACA...but the evidence shows that it is simply not true. Part-time work as a percentage of total employment has dropped since the ACA mandate took effect. This is true in the larger jobs picture and it is also the case with so-called involuntary part-time jobs...those which used to to be full-time but were reduced to part-time by the employer. There have been fewer of those under Obamacare than before the law passed. But even if their ridiculous claim was true, the bill has disastrous and potentially fatal effects for lots of workers. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the real effect of the bill would be the loss of employer-provided health insurance for about one-million workers. It would also add $73.7 billion to the deficit over ten years. So, because they want you to believe their lie that Obamacare is causing a transition of full-time jobs to part-time jobs, theyre willing to take health insurance away from a million Americans and tack another three-quarters of a trillion dollars to the national debt. Make sense to anyone? Every Republican in the Wisconsin delegation voted for the bill. None of the Democrats did.
