HOW TO CARE FOR LOW POROSITY HAIR Hello Beautiful natural chicks! How are we faring? Hope all is going on well? We are going to be talking about caring for low porosity hair. So many calls, messages etc. about when I will be talking about this. Am happy I finally got the chance to do this. So how many of us have done the hair porosity test? Yes, you may ask? Is it necessary? Yes, it is, very necessary because knowing your porosity level helps you to know how you can moisturize your hair effectively. Low porosity hair is prone to build up so you should shampoo weekly, yes, someone would ask why? Thought it strips the hair of moisture? But your hair needs to be clean, ready and open to receive moisture in form of water, oils, and creams. So if co-washing weekly is not working for you then turn to sham (poo) washing weekly. You have to learn your own hair, don’t say ‘’ my friend is 4b and co-washing weekly works for her and I am 4b too’’ so you join her in her regimen, no, it doesn’t work that way, we are different with our different body make up so it’s imperative you sit back, watch and learn how your hair responds to every treatment you feed it with, that’s the only way you can make head way in this journey. HOW TO CONDITION LOW POROSITY HAIR= Choose a light weight conditioner and not the type that would weigh your hair down. Light weight conditioners penetrate the hair easily and helps hold moisture intact for a long time an example is the popular and low cost VO5 conditioner. You also need to stay away from protein rich conditioners because most of them can’t effectively penetrate the hair and you may be left with brittle hair. If you do protein treatment weekly and it’s not working for you then switch to once a month, yes, you heard me right; sometimes our hair suffers from protein overload and breaks. Humectants such as honey and vegetable glycerin should be your best friend. Heat should also be your pal; you can get heat from plastic caps, steamers, GHE (green house effect) etc. Steaming is the best way to deep condition low porosity hair, because the cuticles will be raised and moisture will get in. HOW TO MOISTURIZE LOW POROSITY HAIR= Water should be your best moisturizer. I have changed my spritz content ratio to 90% water and 10% oils and it’s working for me. No moisturizer is as effective as water but the issue is water can’t stay for a long time, it will definitely dry up that’s why we need to add oils and sealants to store up the moisture cos if you leave your hair dry for too long then you are inviting Mr. Breakage for a feast on your hair lol! After washing your hair, squeeze out as much water as possible to have room for your products to penetrate easily choose light weight moisturizers, oils like Coconut, extra virgin, sun flower, Canola, avocado, moringa oils etc. Then seal with oils such as Castor, Jojoba, Black seed, etc. Extra sealing tip- After applying Shea butter mix, a detangler and /or leave-in, you can seal with pure aloe vera gel from the plant or a store bought one as it’s acidity is perfect for closing the hair cuticle to stop moisture from ‘’escaping’’. We shall continue with this topic because we need to deal with and successfully overcome Mr Breakage!!!
