HOW TO EAT ROADS A few ignorant people have tried to dismiss the PF governments road infrastructure projects by saying we wont eat roads. But here are a few points on how roads will put food on peoples tables: ■ Improved road network will make all places accessible and hence the production and distribution of goods and services in previously inaccessible areas will be easier, quicker and cheaper, resulting in lower prices of goods and services. ■ Good roads will encourage investors to set up trading, manufacturing, distribution and other centres in previously inaccessible places ■ This will result in local jobs being created and skills from elsewhere being localised ■ It will also result in the establishment of support industries especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) ■ Local people will be able to move much more easily, freely and cheaply to look for economic opportunities as more public transporters will enter the market unlike when the road is inaccessible ■ The cost of transportation will be driven down as vehicles will no longer incur huge maintenance and repair costs as is the case when the roads are bad. ■ There will be an increase in productivity. For instance, the distance between Monze and Gwembe will be covered in 3 times less time than it has been covered due to the state of the road. This means the number of deliveries per given time will increase as the turnaround time will be reduced. ■ Increased productivity means an increase in the goods and services produced, which may lead to reduction in prices and an increase in exports. ■ This will mean AVAILABILITY and AFFORDABILITY of goods and services So yes, TUKALALYA IMISEBO. We shall eat roads! Stop misleading people. The PF is working! It takes time to turn around a messy situation BUT we are on the right track. Sustainable development is not an overnight act. Its a long term issue. The job of the Zambian opposition is to OPPOSE and wish for PF to fail BUT we shall not fail because we have started delivering and we have started where it matters the most: INFRASTRUCTURE!
