HOW TO MAKE GOD LISTEN TO YOUR PRAYERS Thoughts of HH Shri Bhola Nathji (1902-1992) a Great Spiritual Luminary of our times, who gave peace and beatitude to countless folk during his lifetime and relieved them of their sorrows and sufferings. There are people who complain that they offered prayers to God but He did not listen to their prayers. But this calls for a little self-introspection, and also for a recipe to make God listen to your prayers. And the recipe is in fact very simple as propounded by HH Shri Bhola Nathji: If suffering has surrounded you and you cannot escape, then follow that TESTED PRESCRIPTION of forsaking all trust in yourself and your powers, and laying all your troubles before your Master, wait to see what He will bring. Either you will be released from that trouble or else you will be given strength to bear it. Only let there be no pretense in your surrender! You must LET GO if you want God to enter your life. You must empty yourself of your pride and ego if you want God to answer your prayers. What is your pride and ego? It is simply your saying: I can do this! I can do that! I have done this! And I have done that! Leave aside this ego and simply say It is God that does everything through me, and I am nothing but His instrument! ----------------------------------------- THE STORY OF QUEEN DRAUPADI, 5000 B.C. There is the famous story of the Queen Draupadi of the noble and righteous Pandava Kings, who was entrapped by the evil Kaurava Kings who sought to disrobe her publicly to humiliate her. She was a proud queen who could not bear to see herself belittled thus, and shouted with great anger at the evil men. However this invoked greater jeers and opposition from them and they began pulling at her saree viciously. She grabbed on to the saree and held it firmly and tightly, fighting back with all her strength. When she discovered her strength was insufficient to fight back and to hold on to the saree she cried out for help to the assembled group, who hung their faces shame-facedly, bound either by an oath of allegiance or too scared to fight the Kauravas right then. Suddenly she realised that nothing and no one was going to help herself and that she herself who had hitherto been a queen could not help herself either. All her efforts were directed at saving herself through the use of her own pride and ego. And now this pride and ego vanished like a straw before a storm. She forgot the people of the world around her. And then she turned towards God and said: If it be Thy Will that I am humiliated today, then I surrender myself before Thee, but if it be Thy Will that these enemies cannot harm me then I am no longer afraid! I leave everything in thy hands! When water is thrown out of a glass, the air outside spontaneously enters within. In a like manner when the pride and ego of man vanish, God enters spontaneously within him! And Draupadi found that the Hand of God came to replace her hand holding on to the saree. And in one of the greatest miracles of the time, the place was flooded with hundreds and thousands of sarees. As the enemies would try and remove one saree, another would take its place, until countless sarees were piled up in the place and the hands of the enemies grew too tired to pull more and they were filled with awe and terror at the presence of some Unseen Power - which was the power of God, Lord Krishna, who had appeared miraculously on the scene. Lord Krishna said to Draupadi, the Queen: O Draupadi! It was not I who delayed coming, it was you who delayed calling me! The moment you let go, I came at once! When man gives up all his confidence in himself and his own efforts and lets go completely of his own pride and ego and becomes like a zero taking refuge in God, in the real sense of the word-- then Divine Help comes of a certainty the moment he prays for it. The Divine Light is always within man, but it has been veiled by his own ego and pride. And the moment that ego and pride disappears there is God and God alone inside Him, who takes care of his sufferings and reveals Himself in the process!
