HPU allows ragging convicts to continue MBBS course Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) today allowed four students, convicted in the Aman Kachroo ragging case, to resume studies for their MBBS degree. The decision was taken in the meeting of Executive Council of HPU after the Law department of the government gave its opinion in favour of the convicted students, who had completed their sentence, a spokesman of the varsity said. Aman Kachroo (19), a first year MBBS student had died at Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College, Tanda in Kangra district after he was subjected to ragging by four seniors on March 7, 2009. Abhinav Verma, Mukul Sharma, Navin Verma and Ajay Verma, arrested after a case of murder was registered against them, were convicted on November 11, 2010, under sections 304 II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 34 (common intent) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC by the trial court and their sentence was also upheld by the High Court. They were freed from the jail before completion of sentence as the state government granted remission in sentence for good conduct. After undergoing sentence, the students represented to the government to allow them to complete the MBBS course and after taking the legal opinion, the matter was referred to HPU which took the final decision in this regard today. The students would resume studies from the point they had left it at the time of arrest, the spokesman said. -BS
