HR Alerts Paid Sick Leave: New Law in California A recently passed law will make California the second state to mandate paid sick leave for many employees. Under the “Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014”, which goes into effect July 1, 2015, California employers will be required to provide at least three days of paid sick leave each year. This benefit will accrue at a rate of one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked. Paid sick leave laws are a growing trend. In addition to statewide paid sick leave requirements in the states of California and Connecticut, many municipalities, including New York City, Seattle, Jersey City, Newark, San Francisco, San Diego, and Portland, Oregon, have implemented their own paid sick leave requirements. We anticipate several additional municipalities and states to be added to this list in the next few years.
