HSIE Imax Theatre Excursion 18 September Yr 9 HSIE students attended the Imax Theatre on 18 September at Darling Harbour. It was a fantastic experience for the students to have the opportunity to consolidate their learning beyond the classroom. The first film titled ‘Antarctica’ took the students on a journey from the early days of Antarctic exploration through to the secrets that this continent holds with respect to the history of the earth. The students were captivated by tales of Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott, the original Antarctic explorers. The hardships faced by these pioneers of exploration gave students an insight into what it was like to push the boundaries of what is possible. The students were intrigued to learn that by drilling into the ice scientists can tell what the temperature was and what the climate was like in a particular period of time dating back thousands of years. How the fierceness of the ice age affected our planet created the perfect introduction for the next film. Titans of the Ice Age (3D) was a true masterpiece of cinematography. This film opened a window to our past by portraying the life of the megafauna that once roamed our planet. The struggles that the creatures faced in this epoch of time were detailed in 3D creating a truly amazing experience for all who watched. The woolly mammoth, the sabre tooth tiger and the discovery of ‘lyuba’ the baby woolly mammoth unearthed in the Siberian mountains, gave students the opportunity to learn about what life was like during the ice age. The stories told captivated the students and both films received a rousing reception from the audience. I would like to thank our interns Miss Lewis and Miss Edwards for their work on this excursion.
